Changes in Interim Work Permits for International Graduates in Canada

Canada has recently announced an extension of the validity period for interim work authorization letters granted to international graduates awaiting decisions on their work permits. Previously set at 120 days, this validity period has now been extended to 180 days by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These letters enable graduates to engage in full-time employment while awaiting their work permit decisions, under the condition that they applied before the expiry of their study permits and fulfill certain criteria. Among these conditions are the possession of a valid study permit at the time of application, successful completion of studies, compliance with off-campus work regulations, and adherence to allowable work hour limits. Notably, individuals holding interim work authorization are permitted to continue working even if they temporarily leave and re-enter Canada, although they may need a valid temporary resident visa.
